The painting depicts a biblical story when the archangel Gabriel announces to the Ever-Virgin Mary that she has been chosen to become the mother of the Son of God. This is not only the moment of the Annunciation of the higher will, but at the same time the moment of conception by the Holy Spirit (which is shown by a sheaf of fire on the figure of Mary). This is also the moment when Mary was given full knowledge of the tragic mission predetermined for her son (Golgotha is in the lower left corner of the picture), as well as knowledge of the entire dramatic history of mankind that followed this event. The Most Blessed Maria accepts this with awe, pain and humility.
